Research Data Management
Research Data Management
Research data management - good practices
Collecting data
- Make sure if you can use existing data to avoid unnecessary duplication of research
- Use a consistent and clear method of describing files and folders so you can find and recognize their contents
- Plan where you will store the data during the research

Documentation
- At the stage of research - description of methodology, procedures, instruments and tools
- At the database stage - read-me file, metadata
- Good metadata should be findable by humans and algorithms - standardized, consistent, interoperable
Search engine for domain metadata standards
Security
- Physical security - against unauthorized access, destruction, media damage, theft
- Digital security - strong password, back-up on a 3-2-1 basis (3 copies, 2 media, 1 in another location)
- Sensitive data - encryption, anonymization, strictly controlled and limited access
Sharing
- It is recommended that research data be made available in a trusted, preferably certified research data repository
- Find out if the repository assigns a permanent, unique identifier (e.g. DOI), what are the possible costs of depositing, what is the acceptable file size, formats, metadata standards
- Look for a domain-specific repository first - because of scientific impact, citations
